Indianapolis area dentist discusses treatments for the various stages of gum disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a very serious oral condition that requires prompt treatment. In many cases, it can be prevented through vigilant at home and professional dental care. However, if gum disease does occur, it is important to treat it quickly to prevent the condition from advancing. At Washington Street Dentistry, our team has years of experience offering services to treat gum disease and restore oral health.

Dr Mathew and Team discusses treatments for the various stages of gum disease

Gum disease begins as gingivitis. Gingivitis is the first stage of the disease and is highly treatable. In most instances, the side effects of gingivitis can be reversed with persistent care. Treatment for gingivitis typically involves a professional cleaning. This cleaning will remove the harmful plaque and tartar from the teeth and gums and help eliminate the bacteria that cause them. After that, the dentist may recommend more frequent dental visits to monitor the mouth until health is fully restored.

If gingivitis does not receive professional treatment, gum disease can advance to the stage known as periodontitis. Periodontitis can cause loss of bone structure, gum tissue, and eventually tooth loss. Once the condition reaches periodontitis, advanced treatment is necessary. While the effects of the condition cannot be reversed, the condition can be halted.

Treatment for periodontitis includes a procedure called scaling and root planing. Scaling and root planing is way to thoroughly clean the infection from the teeth and gums, including the root.
