Why Indianapolis area patients should consider restoration with tooth colored fillings

Dr. Matthew Church Providing restoration with tooth colored fillings

In the past, cavities were often treated with the use of silver amalgam. While these fillings seemed harmless, studies continue to show that amalgam can expose patients to mercury. Not only that, but they are unsightly and stand out from the natural tooth structure. Patients have also found that these fillings expand and contract with temperature changes, causing them to allow bacteria into the center of the teeth which may result in infection. Instead, Dr. Matthew Church of Washington Street Dentistry encourages patients to consider restoration with tooth colored fillings.

WHAT IS A TOOTH COLORED RESTORATION?

Restorations such as fillings can now be made of composite resin. Composite resin is a clay-like material that replaces the use of silver amalgam fillings which may be harmful to the smile and body. This material is the same color as natural tooth enamel, so it blends in seamlessly with the smile when used for dental fillings. It also eliminates the likelihood of mercury toxicity and does not expand and contract in the same way as amalgam.

WHY ARE FILLINGS IMPORTANT?

When patients have cavities, they need to understand the importance of having them treated. Without fillings, the cavities become considerably larger. They may cause infection to the dental pulp inside of the tooth, requiring patients to have procedures performed such as root canal therapy to bring their smiles back to health.
