Dental implants

Dental implants are considered the solution of choice to replace a missing tooth or teeth. They are surgically placed into the jawbone and they will fuse with the bone naturally over time. Because an implant replaces the root of the tooth, it can provide stimulation to the bone, which helps prevent bone resorption. A dental implant procedure is completed with an attractive dental crown and looks and feels like a natural tooth. Dental implants may last a lifetime with proper care.

Dentures

For centuries, dentures were the only treatment to restore oral function and physical appearance for patients who had lost their teeth. Unlike the false teeth of ages past, modern removable dentures look very realistic and they may be held in place with adhesives or suction. The two types of dentures are:

  • Full, also called complete, dentures are used when an entire arch of teeth are missing or need to be removed. They are available as “immediate,” which may be made in advance and placed the same day as extraction, or “conventional,” which are placed after the gums and bone have healed from extractions. An immediate denture is typically provided as a temporary solution while the conventional denture is made.
  • Partial dentures fill in the space between remaining teeth, similar to a dental bridge, but with the ability to be removed easily.

Dental bridge

This restoration is permanently attached to the teeth or to a dental implant on either side of a gap. A dental bridge contains prosthetic teeth and can prevent healthy teeth nearby from shifting.
