Indianapolis, IN patients can seek tooth extractions with Dr. Matthew Church
Most Indianapolis, IN patients never want to hear about tooth extraction. However, there are times in which tooth extraction may need to be performed. Tooth extraction is beneficial for patients who have:
- Impacted wisdom teeth
- Infected teeth
- Loose teeth
- Broken teeth
- Overcrowding
Dr. Matthew Church of Washington Street Dentistry understands the importance of removing natural teeth in some situations. He knows when it is needed to achieve a more attractive smile or to eliminate pain caused by impaction. There are two types of procedures – simple extractions and surgical extractions. Simple extractions require the dentist to grasp the tooth and rock it back and forth, using leverage to lift the whole tooth from the bone of the jaw. In some situations, the dentist may need to cut into the gums to access the tooth and do a surgical extraction. This is more invasive and may require more healing time than a simple extraction.
Which is best for me?
Patients with a tooth above the gum line can typically have a simple extraction, while patients who have broken teeth or teeth that have not yet surfaced are candidates for surgical extraction. Extractions are not uncomfortable, as patients are anesthetized and sedated as needed. Our team can walk patients through the procedure every step of the way so there are no surprises. During the initial appointment, the dentist will also advise if any other treatments should be completed at the same time such as the placement of a dental implant.
