Indianapolis area dentist offers procedures with sedation dentistry
Sedation dentistry is a solution available to patients in Indianapolis, IN who are interested in having a more pleasant experience at the dental office. Procedures are often done with sedation for several reasons. This includes:
- Mild to severe dental anxieties
- Strong gag reflexes
- Conditions that may make staying still difficult for a patient
- Pain management
- Long periods of time in the dental chair
At Washington Street Dentistry, we are pleased to provide two types of dental sedation for patients in the chair, including nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation.
Nitrous oxide
The most commonly used form of sedation at our practice is that of nitrous oxide. This is a gas that is odorless and colorless and is administered through the nose. The amount used is monitored throughout treatment to ensure patients are relaxed. It is easily reversed with the administration of oxygen. In the past, many patients know it as “laughing gas” as some patients may become giddy. However, most feel sleepy or just extremely calm and relaxed.
Oral conscious sedation
For patients with stronger anxieties, it may be best to go with oral conscious sedation. This is a special medication that is prescribed to patients to take approximately one hour prior to arriving at the dental office. Patients are coherent but should arrange for transportation to and from their appointment for safety. Patients rest when they return home and feel their normal selves—while having all their dental work completed!
