Dentist in Indianapolis provides versatile and long-lasting dental crowns

A dental crown is a highly-versatile and long-lasting “cap” that covers the visible portion of a tooth. Dental crowns have many uses, including protecting, supporting, and masking a tooth that is damaged, weakened by infection or decay, cracked, discolored, oddly-shaped, or worn down. The procedure can resolve cosmetic or functional issues. Crowns can also be used to anchor a dental bridge or to top off a dental implant.

At Washington Street Dentistry, serving patients and families in the greater Indianapolis region, including Anderson, New Palestine, Cumberland, Lawrence, Greenfield, and East Indianapolis, Dr. Matthew Church and our professional dental team offer a complete array of advanced dentistry. We provide several options for patients who are appropriate candidates dental crowns. While crowns can be made of porcelain, ceramic, resin, metal alloys, gold, or stainless steel, Dr. Church will often recommend porcelain-fused-to-metal for treatment of visible teeth because the crown blends in with the surrounding teeth.

For molars in the back of the mouth, gold crowns may be recommended. In any situation, a comprehensive consultation will determine the best treatment for each patient’s unique needs.

Single crowns

When used to restore a single tooth, a custom-designed crown is placed over the visible portion of the tooth and cemented into place. The crown absorbs the pressure of normal chewing and biting so that the natural tooth is protected.

Dental implants

A dental implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. When a tooth is lost, the bone and teeth surroun

ding it become vulnerable to erosion and shifting. After the titanium post is surgically inserted into the bone, an abutment is added and a dental crown covers the visible portion of the implant. As patients chew and bite, slight pressure is placed upon the implant, which stimulates the bone of the jaw, keeping it strong.

Dental bridge

As inferred by the name, a dental bridge spans the gap created by a missing tooth or teeth. To secure the bridge on either side, a dental crown is added to healthy teeth or to a dental implant.
