What is pediatric care?

care focuses on our youngest patients! At Washington Street Dentistry, we believe that every patient deserves the attention of an experienced provider. Dr. Matthew Church is experienced in handling children in his practice, even those with special needs. He sees infants and other young children in his office, as well as parents and grandparents. Pediatric care often involves the following services:

  • Examinations – it is important for all patients to have routine examinations to follow their oral health journey and ensure they have what they need to maintain a beautiful, healthy smile.
  • X-rays – x-rays are an important diagnostic tool used by many medical professionals to view the body in areas where they cannot be physically seen. X-rays can look for malformations, cavities, and bone health.
  • Cleanings – a professional cleaning is a wonderful way for patients to get hard-to-reach places as clean as possible to reduce the chance of developing cavities or periodontal disease.
  • Fluoride/sealants – fluoride and sealants are treatments that are often applied to the teeth of children to provide protection against cavities and disease. They can also be used on adult patients who may be more susceptible to developing issues in the smile.
  • Fillings – when cavities form, they need to be treated as soon as possible before they become larger and more problematic. This is done with dental fillings, using composite resin to seal the cavities and treat the area of concern.
  • Composite resin bonding – if gaps form between teeth or a tooth becomes chipped, our dental team may utilize composite resin bonding to address the concern. This material is like a clay that is put onto the tooth, shaped, hardened, and polished to look like natural tooth enamel.
  • Invisalign – older children may benefit from orthodontic treatment known as Invisalign. Instead of using metal brackets and wires to reposition teeth, our team utilizes clear aligner tray therapy, which can be just as effective and far less noticeable. Many of our adults enjoy Invisalign treatment as an alternative to conventional braces.
  • Extractions – for children, dental extractions may be required in preparation for orthodontic work or due to impacted teeth, such as the wisdom teeth. We offer surgical and non-surgical extractions in our practice for children and adults.
  • Root canal therapy – in some cases, a permanent tooth may become problematic and require a procedure called root canal therapy, or endodontic therapy. This is offered in our practice for all ages.

When should my child see a dentist?

It is important for parents to bring their children to the dentist at an early age. In fact, most children should be seen as soon as they develop their first tooth. This happens around the age of six months for many infants. However, if the tooth has not erupted through the gum line by their first birthday, they should seek dental attention with our team.

What are the benefits of a family dentist?
