Treating gum disease for Indianapolis area patients

Treating gum disease for Indianapolis area patients,

Gum disease is a condition that is typically avoidable with proper oral health care habits. However, even patients who brush their teeth and floss daily may experience this problem if bacteria are persistent. Gum disease is an infection of the gum tissue that is also called periodontal disease. Treating gum disease in the earliest stages is the best way to restore the health of the smile and reduce bacteria that could continue to destroy one’s oral health.

Methods of treating gum disease

The method used to treat gum disease will depend on the stage of the condition. The earliest stage is called gingivitis. At this point, patients may have mild symptoms such a persistent bad breath or bleeding gum tissue when they brush or floss. If treating gum disease at this stage, most patients will benefit from a thorough cleaning right in the dental chair. However, if patients have left the condition to progress, they may experience periodontitis. This condition may require more aggressive treatments such as scaling and root planing. This is a special type of cleaning that targets bacteria below the gum line. This treatment can be done in our practice, but requires patients to be diligent about caring for their smile following treatment. Most patients with the later stages of gum disease will need to see the dentist more often.
