Why patients in Indianapolis may require tooth extraction surgery

Wouldn’t it be nice if our permanent teeth lasted our entire life? Unfortunately, that is not the case for many adults. While losing a tooth as a child is exciting, it can be traumatic and difficult for an adult. Losing a tooth can impact important daily functions as well as affect the appearance of our smile and our self-esteem. While we do our best to avoid tooth extraction surgery, we also acknowledge that it can be effective when appropriate.

Below are the three most common causes for surgical extraction

  • Infection –If cavities are not properly treated, bacteria can enter the hole causing infection and pain. Typically, a root canal is recommended to eliminate infection and save the tooth, however there are situations when the infection has spread so much that they are no longer a viable solution. In these cases, extraction is necessary.

  • Gum disease – The first stage of gum disease can be treated with an improvement in brushing and flossing as well as routine dental cleanings. When gum disease is left untreated, it can begin to attack the tissue and bone that supports teeth. When this occurs, the gum begins to pull away from the teeth, causing them to loosen and require extraction.
  • Overcrowding – When teeth do not fit correctly within the arch it can prevent proper emergence of permanent teeth and the effectiveness of orthodontic treatment. In certain situations, when the teeth are simply too large for the arch, one or more may need to be extracted to allow for proper development or orthodontic treatment.
