What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are cosmetic restorations that are used by Dr. Matthew Church at Washington Street Dentistry to achieve a more attractive smile when imperfections are affecting the front (anterior) teeth. Problems such as the following can be addressed with veneers:

  • Gapped teeth
  • Unusually shaped teeth
  • Chipped or fractured teeth
  • Slightly misaligned teeth
  • Permanently stained teeth

When patients are struggling with these issues on their most noticeable teeth, they are encouraged to ask us about solutions such as veneers. These restorations are made of porcelain and are fabricated to match the existing teeth in the smile, and they are custom-fitted over the front of the teeth to disguise these issues. They are extremely thin and are natural-looking once they have been put in place.

Who are candidates for porcelain veneers?

Patients with a healthy smile that is free from disease and decay are welcome to book a consultation visit to determine if they are appropriate candidates for the placement of porcelain veneers within their smile. It is important for patients to note that the placement of porcelain veneers does not mean that the teeth are protected from dental problems. The teeth underneath the veneers are still susceptible to issues and should always be monitored with routine evaluations and x-rays.

What is the process of obtaining veneers?

Veneers do require some time, as the design needs to be sent to a laboratory for completion. In addition, patients need to have preparations done to their natural teeth to have the veneers made. First, patients will consult with the team at Washington Street Dentistry to determine if they are appropriate candidates. Patients can ask about alternatives that can be used for the teeth, including composite resin bonding. If patients choose to move forward with porcelain veneers, they need to have their teeth prepared. This requires Dr. Matthew Church to file down a portion of the enamel on the front of the teeth. Then, molds are made and sent to a dental laboratory with specific instructions on the final restoration, such as the shape, color, and size of the new veneers. Within a week or two, the veneers are sent to the dental office and patients come back in to have their restorations bonded in place. Many patients love the ability to change their smile for a decade or longer with a natural-looking solution such as porcelain veneers.

How do I care for my veneers?

Veneers are simple to care for. In fact, they should be cared for in the same way patients care for the rest of their smiles. Patients should brush and floss their teeth after every meal, while also maintaining routine appointments with their dentist for cleanings and evaluations. It is also important that patients avoid chewing or biting on objects that are extremely hard, such as ice cubes, as this can crack the veneers or cause them to fall off the teeth. If patients have conditions such as bruxism, which involves clenching and grinding the teeth, they could benefit from the use of a guard to be worn at night when they sleep to protect their natural teeth and restorations.
