Who may need emergency dental care?

There are many situations which may arise that can require assistance via an emergency dentist. Dr. Matthew Church explains some of the more common situations in which a patient may require dental care in an emergency manner. Below are just a few concepts of when emergency dentistry may be needed:

  • A patient has had a tooth knocked out of their mouth due to trauma/injury
  • A patient has a large cut or injury to the soft tissues of the mouth, including the gums and tongue
  • A patient has a denture that no longer fits and is causing sores or discomfort, resulting in them not complying with wearing their restoration.
  • A patient has a broken or loose restoration which may include porcelain veneers, dental crowns, dental bridges, or others.
  • A patient has an extremely severe toothache that is keeping them from being able to sleep at night or function during the day without the use of pain medications.

These are just a few of the more common dental emergency situations we see in our practice, but is not a list of all the things that can go wrong in one’s oral cavity. If patients need immediate care for a situation, they are urged to call us for assistance.

What do I do if I need emergency dental care?

Dr. Matthew Church will attempt to reattach a tooth that may have been lost due to injury, but may also speak to a patient about tooth replacement options if this fails to work.

Patients who need care are welcome to call our practice as soon as possible for assistance at (317) 333-6788 . During office hours, we may have you come into our office for immediate treatment. Sometimes, with situations such as toothaches, our team may prescribe medication over the phone for a patient to use until they can get into the practice the following day. This ensures the patient is comfortable and pain free so they can rest and get treatment as soon as possible at the office. We may also advise some patients to visit the emergency room if we feel as though we are unable to help in an immediate manner for one reason or another.

What treatment will I receive for my dental emergency?

The treatment given to a patient will be varied based on the specific needs of the patient. Some patients with a severe toothache may benefit from a dental filling if it is caused by a cavity, or a procedure such as a root canal if the dental pulp has become infected or diseased. Dr. Matthew Church will attempt to reattach a tooth that may have been lost due to injury, but may also speak to a patient about tooth replacement options if this fails to work. During the initial evaluation and treatment, our team of professionals will walk patients through the options they have for treatment and ensure they get the care they need as soon as possible.
