Dentist in Indianapolis explains procedure for dental crowns

Dental crowns strengthen, reshape, and realign teeth. It is no wonder many patients choose this treatment to restore health and beauty to the smile. While improving their appearance is appealing, patients also want information about the procedure. Dr. Matthew Church understands, and is happy to discuss the process with them at his Indianapolis dental practice, Washington Street Dentistry.

Consultation and treatment planning

Crowns can be the best solution for restoring a chipped or broken tooth or one with a large area of decay. At a consultation appointment, Dr. Church may take an impression of the existing tooth to create the size and shape of the crown. He will describe the tooth preparation process, and your option for local anesthesia. If you need a temporary crown, while awaiting the final restoration, he explains proper care and maintenance of it. Together, you will create a treatment plan, addressing all of the critical steps.

Crown procedure

During the procedure, Dr. Church prepares the affected tooth and makes a molded impression of your teeth. He sends the impression to a dental laboratory for fabrication of the crown. Then, Dr. Church fits a temporary crown to protect the tooth while you await the final restoration. This usually takes about two weeks. Once the final restoration is completed, we ask you to return for another appointment, and Dr. Church bonds the crown to the affected tooth.

Preserving longevity of the restoration

Instructions for properly caring for the restoration are included in the treatment plan. They include maintaining proper oral hygiene habits by brushing at least twice daily and flossing before bedtime. This practice helps keep plaque away from the area where the crown meets the gum line. It also aids in keeping dental decay and periodontal disease at bay. With proper care, crowns can last up to 15 years.

If you have a chipped or broken tooth, do not delay treatment. It is important to address a damaged tooth immediately. A crown can restore the affected tooth, while keeping your smile radiant. Call (317) 333-6788 today to schedule a consultation appointment with Dr. Church, and begin your treatment planning.
